Part 4 – Negril Dream Weekend

After our stay in Montego Bay and a day trip to the Zipline Adventures in Lethe, Hanover, we moved on to Negril in Westmoreland. Negril is one of the most exciting places to stay in Jamaica, especially if you come here by the end of July because this is the time for the staging of the Negril Dream Weekend.

The shortest and fastest journey from Montego Bay to Negril is through the parish of Hanover. The journey is only one and a half hours because the A1 coast road is in very good condition. While enroute to Negril make sure to stop in Lucea, Cousins Cove and Orange Bay and enjoy the stunning views on your drive to Negril.

Where to stay in Negril?

If you love to party, Negril is the place to be. But before you can party all night long, you need a place to sleep. Negril offer lots of accommodations from guest houses, hotels to all-inclusive resorts. With our own ALLinVillas Negril resort still under construction, you need to search websites like tripadvisor for other sustainable and eco-friendly resorts. Rooms in Negril are affordable, you can find a room for as low as $20 US, a night. Luxury resorts or villas are more costly; a couple thousand dollars per night.  Your choice of a room depends on your wallet.

Major Events in Negril, like the Jamaica Dream Weekend, are usually noisy, so you might not want to sleep in the Seven Mile Beach area. The entire Norman Manley Boulevard and surrounding areas get very crowded with ongoing parties 24/7. Instead, choose the Westend area or a relaxing hillside retreat if you need quieter environment.

Special Dream Weekend Negril

negril dream weekend jamaica 2016Jamaica’s Dream Weekend is a week-long party. It is usually held during independence celebration. The weekend includes up to a dozen events taking place, with thousands of patrons, enjoying themselves and participating in themed activities.

The main sponsor for 2016 was Appleton Rum. The general season ticket costs about $28,000 JA ($280 US).  Early bird tickets are available online. If you choose to pay as you go, the cost is $3,000 to $ 9,000 JA for a single event.

5 Days of Music, Dancing & Fun

The event began with the famous Dream LIVE Concert where top Reggae and Dancehall artistes performed at Cayenne Beach.

Day 2 was a daytime affair at Celebrity Playground, here DJs played lively tunes and we thoroughly enjoyed Wavz Beach until 9pm. Revelling was in high gear. What a party spirit with food and drink all-inclusive! The all-white dress code was perfect for Daydreams at Wonderland. This is a very popular and well sophisticated event. We partied from 2pm until 9am. If you want to get involved in all the fun week events make sure you are physically fit. Yush (90s) at Cayenne Beach was an exciting night event. Dancehall artist Elephant Man and his friends had the crowd in a frenzy.

Day 4 was the real highlight. It was time for the Xtreme Wet ‘N’ Wild water party at Kool Runnings Aventure Park. Live performances and DJs made this a fantastic all-inclusive event. This was more than enough party for us. Hardcore fans of course moved on to World Vibes Dancehall Juggling at Wonderland and the next day’s Dream J’ouvert event, which is an amazing paint, water & powder Soca Party.

Most beautiful places to visit around Westmoreland

The parish of Westmoreland has countless lovely places to visit. You can never visit it all in one trip to Jamaica, so you have to visit the country more than once.

Here are the top must-visit sights to check out while in Negril :

1. Mayfield Falls :

This is one of the best waterfalls in Jamaica. You have to drive up through the Mountains, to reach Mayfield Falls. It is breathtaking! This rural part of Jamaica is amazingly beautiful. In just an hour drive from Negril you will reach a little paradise. Mayfield Waterfall has twenty- one widely spaced cascades. A tributary from the Cabarita River, the water is cool and clear.

If you like, you can stay over night or even longer. Our Cabarita Eco-Lodge is the perfect place to start hiking tours, or go on a bird watching spree. The Lighthouse in Negril was built in 1894. The Negril Lighthouse is a few miles down the road from Rick’s Cafe. It is a place of silence and serenity compared to the parties at Negril Dream Weekend. It is an interesting cultural history spot and provides a fantastic view of Negril’s Westend and it’s Cliffs.

3. Roaring River and Cave :

This area is a heritage and nature park near Petersfield, north-east of Savanna-la-Mar. The Roaring River runs underground, before reappearing close to the Roaring River Cave. There are a several limestone caverns with a lovely mineral spring inside. Guided tours are provided for visitors who want to explore the Cave. The Cave has a fresh water sinkhole and visitors can go for a swim in there as well.

We had a whole day fun at Roaring River. It’s a great place for a break, away from the crowd at Negril Dream Weekend. Here you can chill for a day. Check out our next blog with full details on the Roaring River and Cave experience.
